The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council at the weekend, held a Christmas Carol for its members as part of efforts to end the year 2021.

The event was graced by no fewer than one hundred and thirty journalists and guests from all nooks and crannies of the State. Highlight of the Carol was the delivery of soul lifting renditions dished out by Lagos NUJ Choir in between the reading of the Nine Lessons of Christmas by some members. The celebration was held along with the 2021 December Congress, and Thanksgiving Service to mark the one year anniversary of Mr. Adeleye Ajayi-led administration.
Meanwhile, the Executive members of Lagos Council ably led by Mr. Adeleye Ajayi presented its scorecard having clocked a year in office on November 26th, 2021.
Top among the achievements of the administration included NUJ/Google tools training for 600 members out of which 450 have been trained. Lagos Council in collaboration with British Council Rule of Law Anti-Corruption (RoLaC) sensitised 30 Journalists comprising reporters and editors on Criminal Justice and Corruption reportage in Nigeria, and the Nigeria Customs Service training for 29 members comprising journalists covering maritime beats and some senior editors.
Under this administration, Lagos NUJ secretariat remodeling has reached 90% completion stage as the edifice will be ready for commissioning before the end of the year 2021.
Members welfare had been on the front burner and will continue to be as the Union had engaged concerned managements of media houses on the need to create good working environment, and take staff salaries, pensions and retirement benefit seriously by paying as and when due.
In the area of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Ajayi-led administration donated relief materials to both Little Saints Orphanage located at Ekoro road, Abule Egba, and the Holy Family Home for The Elders, located at Babalosha, Mushin, Lagos.
Lagos NUJ Chairman and some elders of the council reunited members of NAWOJ. The council also intervened in the crisis rocking both PJAN and the FMMC Chapel.
Barely a year in office, the Council has embarked on moves towards securing Provisional Survey and Global Certificate of Occupancy, (CofO) for subscribers of Abaren Land, as no stone will be left unturned in engaging Prime Waterview Holdings on the need to refund members' funds trapped in the failed Pen Jewel Estate Project.
Other achievements of the administration included a week long befitting 2021 Press Week for members and Presentation of Awards to Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu: Award of Excellence as Outstanding Governor of the Year, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Obasa: Award of Excellence for Outstanding Contributions to Governance as A Lawmaker, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi: Award of Excellence for Outstanding Contributions to the Development of the Maritime Sector, The Nigerian Shippers' Council: Award of Excellence for Outstanding Contributions to the Development of the Maritime Sector, Rev. Mother Esther Abimbola Ajayi: Award of Excellence as An Outstanding Philanthropist. Other Awardees were Mr. Allen Onyema: Award of Excellence for Outstanding Contributions to the Development of the Aviation Sector, National President of NUJ Chief Chris Isiguzo: Award of Excellence for Outstanding Contributions to the NUJ.
and Comrade (Mrs) Olufunke Fadugba: Award of Excellence for Outstanding Contributions to the NUJ.
Competitive Awards were also won by the following members Wole Oyebade: Reporter of the Year, Gbenga Salau: Feature Writer of the Year, Gowon Akpodonor: Sports Journalist of the Year, Olubukola Veronica Bakare: Public Affairs/Information Officer of the Year, Akeem Salau: Photo Journalist of the Year, Lillian Obiageli Ario: Broadcast Journalist of the Year and Gbenga Salau: Journalist of the Year.
Lagos Council Executive members ably led by Mr. Adeleye Ajayi was able to secure a brand-new bus facilitated by the Speaker, Lagos House of Assembly, Rt. Hon (Dr) Mudashiru Obasa courtesy of Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT) Foundation. The Council also received the following items from Nigerian Breweries in the month of November, 2021.One Hisense 70 inches UHD Television, one 43 inches Hisense LED Television, 5 HP (Intel) laptops, One Upright Snowsea Cooler, and One Hisense Indoor Unit of Air Conditioner.
Under this administration, no fewer than 120 members were mobilised to the National Delegates Conference in Umuahia, Abia State. The council catered for the transportation, accommodation and allowances of members during the Delegates Conference where a member of Lagos Council Mr. Samuel Dada, emerged as National Financial Secretary of NUJ.
This administration has been able to offset huge part of over N30 million debts inherited by the immediate past administration under the leadership of Dr. Qasim Akinreti.
Under Adeleye Ajayi as Chairman, Lagos Council website was restored with an official weblink to promote the Council's activities/stories. The website also has images of past Chairmen of Lagos council as well as allows for membership Data storage.
Under Health, the Council facilitated Hepatitis test and vaccine for members at affordable prices during September Congress.
With congressional approval, the Adeleye Ajayi led exco renamed the Light House of the union located in Victoria Island to Lateef Kayode Jakande House (LKJ House) to honour the late first Civilian Governor of Lagos State.
This administration was able to endorse and supervise the establishment of the International Institute of Journalism(IIJ) Centre in Lagos which will take off in January, 2022.
The NUJ Constitution Review Sub Committee was put in place to carefully study the NUJ constitution and make recommendations on how to improve on the document.
Members of Lagos Council are hopeful that the year 2022 will bring good tidings, as they look forward to a better Union under the leadership of Mr. Adeleye Ajayi.
