Some seven months after the unceremonious ban of Twitter in Nigeria, the Federal Government has unbanned the microblogging site, with effect from 12am, Thursday, January 13, 2022, reports ITREALMS.
ITREALMS gathered was contained in a press statement by the Chairman, Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement who doubles as the Director-General, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi in Abuja.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) directs me to inform the public that President Muhammadu Buhari, has approved the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria effective from 12am tonight, 13th January 2022.
"The approval was given following a memo written to the President by the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim,” he said.
Industry observers, ITREALMS gathered noted that telcos must have been preinformed before the proclaimation because most of them were in the technical committee and they will do everything possible to 'switchon' their networks for teeming Tweeps in the country.
ITREALMS equally gathered that in the memo, the Minister had updated the Federal Executive Council and followed up with a request for the President, General Muhammadu Buhari, retired to approve the lifting based on the Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement’s recommendation.
ITREALMS recalls that on Friday, June 4, 2021 FG proclaimed the suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria via a tweet from @FMICNigeria.
In a follow-up press statement, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, affirmed then, the Federal Government of Nigeria had suspended Twitter in the country, indefinitely.
"The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter in Nigeria," he said, citing alleged persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria's corporate existence.
