Women have been described as home pillars just as they were charged to brace up to their roles in support of men for impactful foundation and better society, reports ITREALMS.
The Parish Priest of St. Jude Catholic Church, Mafoluku-Oshodi, Lagos, Rev. Fr. Gabriel Odin OP, gave this charge during the 2022 Mother's Day and Special Aid Fund Raising Ceremony on Sunday in the parish with the theme: The Catholic Woman: The Heart of the Family.
Fr. Odin in his homily noted that this year’s commemoration of Mother’s Day by the Catholic Church coincided with the celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday which depicts women as merciful tools to the family, just as he advised them to make certain they raise good children for better society, but must not stay in abusive relationship.
The Priest also enjoined mothers to be good ambassadors to their children, extolling the good virtues of motherhood as they are role models for a greater and better society.
He emphasised that mothers should allow God to lead them through in discharging their duties as pillars of the home by emulating Mother Mary and be a good sustainer of their homes.
"It is pertinent to celebrate a woman, to celebrate the mothers in particular because they are in the homes standing as pillars to support the men,” he said.
In her welcome address, President, Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) of the parish, Mrs Nkem Nweke said, the universal church sets aside a day to honour and celebrate mothers in recognition of their onerous role in nurturing humanity.
Speaking to ITREALMS, Mrs. Nweke advised mothers to instill discipline by educating their children early, especially on sex education because of the digital era, stressing that mothers have to stamp their authority early.
“Don't give the children leverage by sparing the rod, while prayers should be a priority as well,” she declared, insisting that its better to break the rod than spare it.
Mrs Nweke also counselled women to "Make sure you don't spare the rod by over-pampering them because the Bible says "if you spare the rod you spoil the child.”
Equally speaking to ITREALMS at the sideline of the event, the leader of Lifesavers Ambassadors of African, Lagos Chapter, Ambassador Stella Akaigwe enjoined mothers to teach the children good morals because they grow up with what they imbibe which turns out to be the reflection of the society.
She affirmed that mothers should monitor their children activities and most importantly, teach them the words of God and pray with them.
Other activities at the occasion presided over by the Deanery Coordinator, Catholic Men Organisation (CMO), Barr. Aloy Abarah, was the unveiling of the special aid fund for indigent women in the parish towards empowering them to support their families wellbeing across education, health, small businesses and entrepreneurship to name a few.
Abarah used the opportunity to advocate for more support for women in the society as part of religious undertaken deliberately to take most families out of the poverty.
Some dignitaries that attended the event included Ezinne Roseline Uche Alisiobi, Vice Chairman of Parish Pastoral Council, Mr. Ben Ekeh; his counterpart at Parish Finance Council Obong Henry Okon, Archdiocesan CMO Vice president, Mazi Obinna Amaechina, special guests, Mr. Ikechukwu Ezeadigbo, Group Executive Editor, ITREALMS Media group, Chinenyeze Remmy Nweke, and Dr. Declan Okpalaeke; chairman of parish CMO, High-chief Virginus Ikwuka was represented by a delegation led by the vice chairman, Kenneth Ezeh and secretary, Mr. Kingsley Agba, among others.
Outstanding prizes were later presented to the top three groups led by Group A out of the seven groups over their performances in the two-day event, including match past, various games and pageant as submitted by the panel of judges led by Rev. Fr. Joseph Osunde, OP.
