Nigerian Christians may occupy Sterling Bank outlets, APCON to sanction bank - ITREALMS

Nigerian Christians have continued to react over the insensitive Sunday Easter message by Sterling Bank plc, with some planning to occupy any Sterling Bank near them by Tuesday, April 19, 2022, reports ITREALMS.

This is coming as ITREALMS gathered that the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) has vowed to sanction the bank over the insensitive public Easter message tagged “Like Agage Bread, He Rose.”

Some Christians, ITREALMS also gathered have commenced a campaign for Christian account holders in Nigeria to shut them down.

Stephen Lonewolf @funkyguavaman said he is not waiting for any sanction from APCON as he encouraged anyone around him to shut down their "#sterlingbankNigeria accounts!"

Ngozi-Okey Amalu Ph.D(Ng) @AmaluNgozi described the bank’s response as “defensive and arrogance in their apology! This is simply nauseating!” stressing that the good news is that APCON has made a statement on them!

ITREALMS further gathered that many Nigerian Christians were obviously annoyed and were asking Sterling Bank what kind of Easter message, and apology they shared with some insisting their apology not accepted.

But according to @APCONOfficial in a press statement available to ITREALMS, they have observed with displeasure on the insensitive and provocative Easter celebration advertisement by Sterling Bank Plc which compared the resurrection of Jesus Christ with Agege Bread.

The statement personally signed by the APCON Registrar and chief executive, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, said the distasteful advertisement was neither submitted nor approved for exposure by the Advertising Standards Panel (ASP), the statutory panel charged with the responsibility of ensuring that advertisements conform with the prevailing laws of the federation as well as the code of ethics of advertising in Nigeria.

APCON, therefore said, it would take necessary actions to ensure that Sterling Bank is sanctioned for the exposure of such offensive advertisement according to law and that no religious belief or faith is ridiculed or any blasphemous advertisement exposed in any guise.
