Excerpts:Top chef and baker at the Crispy Ayoola, Mr Olamilekan Adenuga has revealed how he learnt kitchen stuffs from his aunt, to ITREALMS’ GBEMI OMOTOSO, asserting that some mentors are God-sent and startups must never give up.
Your educational background?
I attended Gifted Child Nursery and Primary School, Oworoshoki, Lagos; Lagos State Model College, Igbokuta, Lagos before getting the National Diploma (ND) in Business Administration from D.s(Dauda Soroye) Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic in Itori, Ewekoro,Ogun State.
How did you coin your brand name?
My love for crunchy and crispy finger foods.
Any background knowledge in baking?
I've always had a passion for cooking when I was a kid, I love any kitchen-related things. Also, I learnt from my aunty who studied Home-Economics.
What is your view on training?
Training is impacting, disbursing knowledge which helps in growth and development of a business.
Any experience in the corporate world?
Yes, once but I didn't hit the target however, I was closer but I hope to try harder next time.
Any challenges in the industry?
There's a lot of competitions in the industry coupled with struggles to get clients. Also, making standard.
How do you get your clients?
Through referrals by friends and family while few from social media.
Any adverse effect of social media on your business?
Yes! As much as I put more effort on Instagram (IG) the client's based is low which is not encouraging.
What's your view on mentorship?
Uhm...some mentors are God-sent, while some are just using someone for their growth; however, mine is God sent.. God bless her @Cabbilicious foods.
Have you ever gotten bad remarks/reviews from customers?
Wow! For the first time in my life, I got a bad remark some weeks ago on my jollof rice which made me sober all day. But I was happy afterwards, the client said that "it's not your fault, mistake happens."
Will you opt for the corporate world if given an opportunity?
Sure… with more training of course, if I’m opportune.
How do you handle deliveries?
Actually, I handle my delivery most times and sometimes car-hires for long distance deliveries.
How do you manage stress?
Thanks to my friends and family who are the helping hands, especially when I am faced with back-to-back orders. They assist in baking or cooking.
Any bad experience from online orders?
Yes oo! I ordered for a #3,500 item online but the dispatch rider fee was #4,800 which wasn't favourable; It was such a bad experience for me big time I had to pay N3,800 at the end of the day.
How has the present economy affect your customer’s patronages?
it's really affecting patronages, but God has been good.
Your memorable day?
Smiles...The day I graduated from the tertiary institution.
How can the youths be motivated to learn skills?
The youths should be given the chance to speak on their talents and support them financially or by opening a platform for skills acquisition with the support of bosses in the Industry to aid them in achieving their purposes.
How many years have you been in the industry?
Practically its 10 years, but officially five years.
Your hobbies?
Smiles... kitchen related things and chatting.
Your likes and dislikes?
I like minding my business and being neat while I dislike pretenses and dirtiness.
Considering harsh reactions and words said by clients how well do you handle it?
By being calm ... I was once insulted by a client and his friend for coming late to venue, despite the fact that it's their late arrival of vehicle for pickup of myself and team; I had to carry on with my activities that day and I later apologized after they're both calmed. And we all say sorry.
What's the public perception about your work?
Smiles … Crispy Ayoola is known to give out nothing but the best on any order given us to deliver.
Your advice to new entrants?
Never give up and should always align with those that knows better in the industry.
