Telecoms Clinic: When phone thieves invade Chamber – ITREALMS

Remmy Nweke writes on the unbecoming of missing mobile phones at the 2022 NBA conference in Lagos, which needs immediate address.

Preamble:
A chamber, primarily is a large room used for formal or public events and according to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, a chamber thus suffices as a hall for the meetings of a deliberative, legislative, or judicial body.

And so it was for the 62nd Nigeria Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference (AGC) at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos state, last Tuesday, the 23rd of August, 2022.

Initially the news that seemingly broke from that chamber was the purported mismatch of Alhaji Kashim Ibraheem Shettima, the vice presidential candidate who represented the All Progressive Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, along the likes of Labour Party and Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidates, Messrs Peter Obi and Abubakar Atiku, respectively.

Learned ‘Shettima’ on knock stand:
ITREALMS  recalled that Shettima had appeared at the expected ‘learned enclave’ more like someone undecided of what to wear, because he appeared on an over-sized suit, a tie and golf sneakers, which attracted the attention of some fashionists in the land who left him with several knocks, despite being a former Bank with Zenith Plc.

But as the fashion knocks began to die down, the news went to town that there were some phone thieves who disguised as lawyers at the chamber of the 2022 NBA-AGC to not only steal phones, but equally vandalised the conference bags and entertainment corners.

Thieves in the chamber:
Confirming this literary invasion was the immediate past President of NBA, Mr. Olumide Akpata, who informed newsmen and entire conference that some persons purported as lawyers stole phones and other items at the conference. He disclosed penultimate Friday in reaction to the viral video showing some disgruntled lawyers destroying conference booths and looting conference materials on Tuesday night with a score of lawyers attending the 62nd NBA-AGC, Lagos State, on Tuesday night, allegedly protesting over the inadequate supply of conference materials as some of them could not get the conference bags.

ITREALMS  gathered that the aggrieved legal practitioners had claimed they did not get their conference materials on time, invaded the collection centre and looted the booths.

Caught on camera:
Akpata stressed that some aggrieved lawyers stole phones, bags and beat-up some staff, insisting that any lawyer found culpable for the theft of phones, and assault on officials will be punished based on video evidences.

“Our colleagues stole bags, phones, beat up staff because we have video evidence. We are going to get the experts to look into those videos. Anybody found culpable for embarrassing our association and our nation like this will definitely be sanctioned,” Akpata declared.

GSMA counsel to customers who lost a phone:
The Global System for Mobile Association (GSMA) advised that if any user’s device is stolen, such a person should inform their service provider’s customer service team immediately, to enable them to block any further calls from being made using your SIM card. It is important that you take this step as soon as you realise that your device has been stolen, as thieves often use stolen devices to make large numbers of high cost calls.

They pointed out that it has become common with many portable electronic devices, mobile devices becoming attractive for the opportunistic thief, so care must be taken no matter the kind of smart devices of nowadays as none comes cheap.

Conclusion:
The phone theft in the chamber of NBA, obviously depicted a lack of trust on the part of the organisation’s leadership, the actions of the protesting lawyers should have taken a less dimension whereas condemnable. The protest may not have been the first time some of them were being denied conference benefits.

Though as promised, following the NBA Disciplinary Committee procedures, this may take some days if not weeks to come, just as it may become imperative to have some security personnel at such a chamber in the near future to maintain peace and order, whilst optimising technology to checkmate the things like stealing of colleagues phones at such a conference which was most demeaning for any respected lawyer that knows his or her onion bearing in mind that a thief is a thief because even if such a thief wears wigs, ‘thief must be thief’.

A new NBA is possible.
