Leading health services provider in Nigeria, STEPCHO Nigeria Limited, has partnered with BEBIG Medical, radiotherapy manufacturing company in Germany to expand access to cancer treatments in Nigeria, reports ITREALMS.
The radiotherapy machines, ITREALMS gathered are linac, ct stimulators and brachytherapy machines.
Also, ITREALMS gathered that the new BEBIG linac machine is used in generating beam radiation treatments for cancer patients using high energy x-rays to destroy the cancer tumours without damaging the surrounding tissue.
Speaking at the BEBIG linac product presentation, held at the Fraser Suites, Federal Capital Tertiary (FCT), Abuja, former Minister of Health and member of the Lancet Commission on Oncology, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said that Nigeria would benefit more as a country on the partnership between the two companies.
"Nigerians would gain more when we offer treatment to our people, but Nigerians need to develop trust in public health and we will give them confidence about getting quality care."
Prof. Adewole pointed out that Nigeria needs more machines and other healthcare facilities to ensure universal healthcare coverage in the country.
"Ideally, we need at least four machines for 1 million people to offer effective treatment. There should not be less than 200 machines working in Nigeria, but we have only two machines working in Nigeria. So there is room for 198 machines in Nigeria,” he said.
The former minister, however, stated that the provision of the machines would prevent Nigerians from going out of the country to access medical care.”
On his part, the Head of Radiology and Oncology Department at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Kaduna State, Prof. Sunday Adewuyi, stated that in 2011 Nigeria, had 18 radiation and clinical oncologists in the country but today it has 100 clinical oncologists and 100 oncology nurses.
He lamented that the numbers of radiotherapy machines have not yet increased therefore, there is need for more machines as part of cancer management and the setting up of comprehensive cancer centres in the country.
The representative for STEPCHO Nigeria Limited, Benjamin Udiri, commended the efforts between the public and private sector in healthcare industry in providing newer and more efficient solutions and support to oncologists in Nigeria.
