Banks to shutdown from Tuesday - ITREALMS

Nigerian banks are warming up for the two-day nation-wide strike as proposed by the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) with effect from Tuesday, September 5, 2023, reports ITREALMS.

The umbrella body that regulates banking and insurance activities in the country, the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institution Employees (NUBIFIE) in a public statement available to ITREALMS, informed they will shutdown on Tuesday and Wednesday in compliance to NLC directive.


"NUBIFIE today issued a notice that all banks will be shutdown on Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th September 2023 in line with the NLC two day strike directive," part of the statement read.


The statement was signed by the General Secretary of NUBIFIE, Mr. Mohammed Sheikh.


ITREALMS recalls that NUBIFIE is a trade union representing workers in the finance industry in Nigeria.


Founded in 1978, when the Government of Nigeria merged nine unions, namely, the Bank of the North Staff Union, British American Insurance Workers' Union of Nigeria, Co-operative Union of Western Nigeria Ltd. Staff Association, Ekiti-Joint Co-operative Movement Staff Union, National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria Workers' Union, Nigerian Union of Banks, Insurance and Allied Workers.

Others were Royal Exchange Assurance Staff Union, United Dominions Corporation and Allied Workers' Union of Nigeria, Western Nigeria Finance and Agricultural Credit Corporation Workers' Union.

NUBIFIE with over 100,000 membership is affiliated to the Nigeria Labour Congress.
