UNESCO unveils data sharing for public good - ITREALMS

The The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has unveiled its latest compendium on data sharing to foster information as a public good, reports ITREALMS.
The 17-page policy brief, ITREALMS gathered speaks to the case of media viability and safety of journalists in the digital ecosystem, stressing that trends in access to data are mixed, but allows for progress in data-sharing by digital platforms.


The publication attempted to harness defined data from platforms which could advance public interest in many ways, but specifically also in regard to two distinct issues, namely by firstly protecting journalists online, and secondly, supporting the economic viability of independent news media.

With regard to protecting journalists, UNESCO pointed out that data cooperation could feed platforms’ wider human rights risk assessments, as well as joint efforts with others to support online safety for journalists.

For improving the economic health of news media, UNESCO noted that pooled data from platforms and news media can benefit both parties

Protections for personal privacy, data security and a critical approach to data are key features of any such arrangements.

In terms of safeguarding journalists, ITREALMS gathered comprised data collaboration which could contribute to platforms’ broader human rights risk assessments and collaborative efforts to enhance online safety for journalists.

To improve the financial stability of news media, UNESCO pointed out that shared data between platforms and news media can be mutually advantageous.

“Essential elements in any such agreements include protections for personal privacy, data security, and a critical approach to handling data, part of the key findings revealed.
