Not less than five Nigerians have been confirmed dead following the last match between Nigeria and South Africa at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2024) taking place at Cote D' Ivoire, reports ITREALMS.
Then the news of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Adamawa State, who was identified as Peter Yunana, who died in same circumstance.
ITREALMS gathered that there was yet another unidentified death reported at Navy Town in Lagos, following the semi-final match.
By daybreak, more confirmed deaths have been recorded.
These included the passage of the Deputy Bursar of Kwara State University, Malete, Alhaji Ayuba Abdullahi, who reportedly died after developing high blood pressure while watching the semi-final match between Nigeria and South Africa at AFCON24. His death was promptly confirmed in a statement released by the university’s management by Thursday morning, indicating that his remains will be entered by 9am.
In addition, a death was reported of Anambra-born international billionaire, High Chief Osondu Nwoye, purported to be the richest Igbo businessman based in Ivory Coast, whose death occurred at the stadium when the Super Eagles second goal was cancelled via Video Assistant Referee (VAR) after he slumped.
Reacting to the rising death profile over the Super Eagles vs Bafana Bafana semi-final match, some industry watchers attributed it to a number of things include neglect of one’s medication and inability to know individual health status, especially hypertensive patients.
They also canvased that autopsy be carried out on all those deaths to determine their actual causes as some could have underlining ailments.
A public analyst, Mr. Deji Fadina while wondering about so many people dying as a result of watching sports, counselled people to see any kind of sport as entertainment.
“Please study yourself and treat sports as entertainment, to be enjoyed in tune with the rhythm of your heart, and not as opium in response to current economic and social stresses.
Sometimes, it is better to let people come and tell you the final results of games, and if possible, watch the recorded versions when you know the results already and you are only enjoying the game for its own sake.
“May the fallen both at home and in Ivory Coast rest in peace. Remember, we are currently not a health services cared-for nation,” he counseled Nigerians to take their personal health seriously.
There is also a public service announcement on social by concerned Nigerians advising those with high blood pressure and other heart-related diseases capable of leading to cardiac arrest to stay off live match as Super Eagles goes to the final with the host country.
