Nigerians suffering CVS hit 65% - ITREALMS

The Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) in Nigeria has reached a prevalence stage with 65 per cent, reports

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), ITREALMS gathered, has become the leading occupational hazard of the 21st century, which causes the critical public health issues in this digital era.
This was revealed in a recent African study by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) under its National Center for Biotechnology Information at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) based in United States of America (USA).

According to the study, computer users who are suffering from CVS in Nigeria has reached a prevalence proportion at 65%, with Ghana recording 51.5%.

ITREALMS also gathered that part of the study conducted in Egypt showed that 92% of eye tiredness was reported among computer operators.

In Ethiopia, for instance, the prevalence of CVS ranges from 68.8% to 81.3% among different population groups as at July 2022.

Further, in developing countries, including Ethiopia, data on the proportion and the causes of CVS were scarce among academic staff for policy conclusions.

Consequently, 
ITREALMS gathered that the Ethiopian study was conducted to determine the prevalence and factors associated with CVS among academic staff at the University of Gondar.

The University of Gondar, until 2003 known as the Gondar College of Medical Sciences, is the oldest medical school in Ethiopia. Established as the Public Health College in 1954, it is located in Gondar, in Amhara Region of Ethiopia. In 2010, the university offered 42 undergraduate and 17 postgraduate programs

This study equally disclosed that CVS though common among academicians and were affected by years of computer use, visual display terminals use, workplace illumination level, rest breaks, and eye droplets.

Experts therefore advised that taking rest breaks in between the work, reducing exposure to display screens, use of eye drops, and optimizing workplace illumination levels were recommended to reduce the problem.
