The Lagos State Advocacy Team of the coalition of civil societies in the health sector has called on stakeholders, philanthropists in the community to collaborate with the government in making the healthcare delivery in the state more accessible to the people, reports ITREALMS.
This the group said would be by supporting with needs identified in their domain as the government alone cannot achieve this.
Speaking at the advocacy visit to the Medical Officer in charge of Health (MoH) in Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Authority (LCDA) on Monday, the Tuberculosis Network (TB) Coordinator, Mrs Ifelunwa Aipoh who led the team re-affirmed the organisation's commitment to identify issues in the primary healthcare (PHC) through the Community Based Organisation (CBO) efforts in checking the facilities in different PHCs in the communities on the state of facilities, service delivery among others and resolve the issues.
Mrs Aipoh also noted that some issues of concern at three PHCs, namely at Ikosi, Maidan and Ideera under Ikosi-Isheri LCDA include that non-availability of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Shortage of HIV kits, shortage of Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) test kit, no-availability of digital thermometer, no free malaria drugs, unavailability of generating set and shortage of fans.
At Maidan PHC, she said, the centre lacks space for the health facility, inadequate amenities such as bed, chairs, Blood Pressure (BP) Monitor, labor rooms, facility were in state of disrepair or distress and was built on a swampy land, no payment receipt, no pharmacy, and operates on about eight hours service daily.
While at Ideera PHC, the team noted that the environment was conducive, just as the facility lack drugs, and test kits.
Responding, Medical Officer of Health (MoH) in charge of Health, Dr. Wasiu Owoyele affirmed that Ikosi PHC runs a 24hours service delivery but makes use of Marquee due to a huge ongoing construction of the PHC nevertheless, the centre boasts of three serviced-generating set with about five fans at the clinic tents extension to cater for the patients.
However, Dr. Owoyele confirmed the non availability of free malaria drugs and test kits (RDT), stressing that the wrong notion that Lagos State was a free malaria state hinders the NGO's distribution of free malaria drugs to the State which makes people pays for the test cum drugs.
The MoH calls for the establishment of HIV centre in Ikosi Phc just as Agboyi-Ketu.
Concerning, Maidan PHC, the MoH maintained that the centre runs on an 8hours center which is under the law-as a local government is expected to have at least a 24hours PHC in its locality while others.
He added there is total overhaul of Maidan PHC coupled that there is a pharmacy at the centre though it might not be standard however, on the receipt, a prompt action has been taken on it.
Buttressing on Ideera PHC, Dr. Owoyele said the local government is aware and working on it.
In his words, Coordinator of Network of Persons With HIV-AIDs in Nigeria (NEPWHAN) Mr Patrick Akpan called for collective responsibility of all stakeholders in the communities to strengthen the healthcare service.
The NEPWHAN Coordinator also said that the work of the three CBOs are doing is to escalate the identified issues to the appropriate arm of the government at various level.
