The President of the Innovation Media Consulting Group, Mr. Juan Senor, has urged Nigerian media leaders to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) for its transformative powers and ensure responsible usage for sustainable future, reports ITREALMS.
Senor who dwelt on "AI-First Media Newsrooms: Utopia or Dystopia?" noted that in order to balance the views on AI's role in media newsrooms, practitioners must acknowledge the potential pitfalls, while emphasizing on the transformative power of AI.
ITREALMS recalled that utopia, typically defined an imaginary community or society that possesses highly desirable or near-perfect qualities for its members. While dystopia also known as a cacotopia or anti-utopia, is a community or society that is extremely bad or frightening, according to open sourced online encyclopedia, Wikipedia.
The transformative power of AI, Senor said, would encourage media leaders to utilize it responsibly for a more sustainable and engaging future.
Also, he called media leaders to action, saying that their organizations need to adapt and innovate to survive.
"Embracing AI while addressing its challenges is crucial for the future of media," he declared.
Senor emphasized on responsible AI implementation, which should focus on transparency, human oversight, and adherence to ethical principles.
AI challenges, Senor said, exists, including the fear of job displacement, algorithmic bias, and the potential for AI to be misused for spreading misinformation.
In addition, Senor said that opportunities abound in AI to include tools for tasks like content creation, audience engagement, data analysis, and product development.
"Examples include AI-powered news summaries, personalized content recommendations, and automated fact-checking," he said.
The media industry, Senor maintained, is faced with some challenges like declining advertisement revenue, shifting consumer behavior, and the rise of fake news.
The opening session of the two-day summit held at the Academy Suites, Abeokuta, was chaired by the veteran journalist and former governor of Ogun State, Chief Segun Osoba, with over 60 media leaders of C-level in attendance.
