Global warming: 130m Africans at risk, as CAAF launches Billion Trees Initiative - ITREALMS

ITREALMS ... making leadership SENSE with digital news!

The Executive Director of the Climate Action Africa (CAAF), Ms Grace Oluchi Mbah, has called for more attention to be paid to effects of global warming due to its impact on the people, especially on the continent of Africa, reports ITREALMS.

This is coming as CAAF has launched a Billion Trees for Africa Initiative (BT4AI) to address environmental degradation across the continent.

Global warming is the long-term heating of earth's surface observed since the pre-industrial period largely due to human activities, primarily fossil fuel burning, which increases heat-trapping greenhouse gas levels in earth's atmosphere.

Mbah in her opening address to the two-day 2024 Climate Action Africa Forum (CAAF2024) at the Landmark Centre, Victoria Island, said that Africa is warming nearly faster than any other region, with some 130 million people at risk from rising sea levels.

The most personal impact of climate change, she underscored, is on smallholder farmers who made up 60 per cent of the population and produce 90 per cent of the food.

“Their lives and livelihoods are on the frontlines of this existential threat,” she decried, stressing that how Africans and climate change stakeholders react to the challenges encountered thereof matters.

“The stories we choose to write of ourselves is up to us,” she said.

The convener of CAAF2024 highlighted the fact behind her team embarking on BT4AI, for instance, and said, it was premised on a fact that small group of thoughtful, committed individuals can change the world.

“So, we choose to push ourselves continually, to innovate, and invest in the future we want for Africa. A future that is sustainable, green, prosperous and harmonious with nature. That is the story of Africa we choose to write,” she said.

Ms Mbah, further described the Billion Trees for Africa Initiative (BT4AI) as ambitious project aimed at also enhancing the ecological and economic resilience of African communities.
