The oil city of Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State is set to host the four-day 2024 international conference of the Nigeria Computer Society, reports ITREALMS.

NCS, ITREALMS gathered is the umbrella body of all the Information Technology (IT) professionals, interest groups and stakeholders in Nigeria with about 20,000 members, spread across all the states of the federation. 

While NCS International Conference is acclaimed the biggest and the most influential IT event in Africa and indeed Nigeria, according to the President, Dr. Muhammad Sirajo Aliyu.

Speaking to ITREALMS on Thursday in Lagos during a press conference, Dr. Aliyu, said the Confab theme is "Technological Solutions for Smart Economy (SmartEco 2024), between Monday 12th to Thursday 15th of August this year.

Stressing the theme was carefully and scientifically chosen in order to provide the needed technological support for government drives and vision in this modern society.

Dr. Aliyu, who was accompanied by the Deputy President, Dr. Charles C. Onyeukwu;  Immediate Past President, Prof. Adesina Simeon Sodiya; Chairman Innovation, Research and Development committee, Dr. Okunoye; Chairman Publicity, Events and Trade Services Committee,  Mrs. Shulammite A. Ilebiyi, and Executive Secretary of NCS, Mr. Segun Adekunle, informed ITREALMS the Confab venue is at Dr. Obi Wali International Conference Centre, Porth Harcourt, River State.

"It is indeed with great pleasure that I inform you of the International Conference of the Nigeria Computer Society NCS) holding from Monday 12th to Thursday 15th of August 2024, with the theme Technological Solutions for Smart Economy (SmartEco 2024)," Aliyu declared.

In the past 47 years of NCS, ITREALMS gathered that this conference venue has been rotated amongst the six geopolitical zones in the country, noting that in 2023, the conference was held at Bauchi, Bauchi State and this year will be held as hybrid, that is on site and virtual attendance.

As said by him, the emergence of connected cities and data-driven nations is making planning and decision-making easier at the global level. Different studies have ranked Africa low in adopting technology to build a safe, secure and sustainable economy. At the heart of the technology driving innovation is data and citizen engagement. In transforming our nation to meet future demand, 

"We must use technology to create a more sustainable and liveable present and secure future for our citizens. We must change our approach and challenge the status quo. Our quest for innovation leveraging research and development must increase. We must develop effective strategies to achieve a Smart Economy Sustainable for the Nation," he said.

Also speaking, the chairperson of the conference subcommittee of NCS, Professor (Mrs) Bukola Onashoga, said, 2024 international conference on “Technological Solutions for Smart Economy (SmartEco 2024)” will bring together policymakers within the government, business leaders, members of academia, professionals and practitioners to deliberate on broad social, economic, and technology trends relevant to the development and sustainability of our nation.

With sub themes such including "Intelligent Cities - Design and Regulatory Framework, eGovernment and policy Framework, E-health and smart healthcare, Precision and intelligent Architecture, Regulation and Digital Consumer Policy, Smart Security and Surveillance System, Application and Tool, Big Data Analysis and Applications, Artificial Intelligence and applications, and Critical National Infrastructure to name a few.

She also said some high profile dignitaries from the international and global IT environment are expected to grace the event with the Executive Governor of Rivers

Sir Siminalayi Fubara, leading the guest alongside His Royal Majesty,  Eze Chike Amadi Worlu-Wodo, Eze Oha Apara IV of Apara Kingdom and Chairman, Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, and Dr. Bosun Tijani, Hon. Minister of Communication and Digital Economy as the special guest of the event, even as the keynoter would be the Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, Director-General, National Identity Management Commission.

Others, ITREALMS gathered include Mr John  Huggins, President British Computer Society, Mr. Bram Fudzulani, President ICT Association of Malawi, Dr. Heloisa Candello, ACM/IBM Brazil, Mr Kola Okunola, Federal Inland Revenue Service, Stacey Hines, President Jamaica Computer Society, Dr. Waudo Siganga, President Computer Society Ke, Anthony Wong- President, International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), Hon Fenibo Fubara- Special Adviser on ICT Rviers State, Hon. Alh. Mohammed Tajo Othman – Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation Kano State, Dr. Amadi Chimezie – Imo State Commissioner for Digital Economy and Government, Dr. Vincent Olatunji- National Commissioner/CEO, Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NPDB), and Sebastine Nzeadibe- Oracle Vice President (Technology Business).
