The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, was released on bail late Monday night after being in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since earlier same day, reports ITREALMS.

His detention, though undisclosed, flashed a general disapproval from labour unions, rights groups, and civil society organisations across the country and beyond.

Confirming this development in a late night press statement available to ITREALMS, NLC Assistant Secretary, Chris Onyeka, said Ajaero was released at about 11:05 PM.

ITREALMS recalled that the arrest came after Ajaero was reportedly detained at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, preventing him from boarding a flight to the UK for an International Trade Union Congress meeting.

The NLC, Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Amnesty International were among those who called for Ajaero’s immediate release, describing the arrest as a violation of his rights and an attempt to silence dissent. The NLC warned of potential nationwide protests if Ajaero was not freed by midnight.

“We are witnessing a new era of impunity under President Bola Tinubu’s government,” Amnesty International said, while TUC President Festus Osifo stressed that Ajaero’s detention was a “dangerous precedent” against workers’ rights.
