The Commissioner for Lands in Anambra State and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Professor Offornze D. Amucheazi has opined that Ndi Anambra should embrace Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) for intractable land disputes, reports ITREALMS. By embracing ADR, he also said, it would bring about lasting peace, harmony in and between communities.
Speaking with ITREALMS, Monday on evolving landgrabbing in Anambra State, Prof. Amucheazi noted that there are some of the issues concerning land matters that ADR, notably, mediation could have resolved, but for the unwillingness of parties to make concessions as well as the lack of understanding of the ADR process.
“Our people need enlightenment on the usefulness of ADR in the resolution of disputes,” he declared, stressing the need to leverage Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).
Prof. Amucheazi who is also a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators as well as the Institute of Mediators and Conciliators (FICMC), urged the media, legal practitioners communities and elders to adopt mediation in resolution of land disputes.
“The media, legal practitioners, community elders, and traditional rulers all have roles to play,” he said.
