Steve Osuji in his response to Prof. Obi Nwakanma's recent piece charging Ndigbo to stop lamenting marginalisation, outlines "Why we must cry marginalisation."
While I agree with ON (Obi Nwakanma) that Igbo as a people must do more and salvage themselves from the overarching morass of underdevelopment, I vehemently disagree that we shouldn't cry marginalisation!
Nigeria is a federal system and Igboland is one of the federating regions/zones. A major one at that...
*Is there a commonwealth? Yes.
*Is this commonwealth being fairly and equitably distributed?
No. Hell, NO!
Is there a PREMEDITATED policy to deny Igbo their fair share of commonwealth? YES.
*In fact, is there an inclination to always pull down Ndigbo at every opportunity. YES. One good example is the yanking of Ihedioha who Imo people wanted and replacing him with an akaliogoli (to use ON's word) and Imo has been set back 20yrs in the last 5yrs.
*they aren't only denying us our fair share of the commonwealth, they are deliberately sabotaging us
*look at the Federal civil service, political appointments, placements in the military, security and intelligence services, number of local governments, census figures, FG projects, the list of avenues for marginalisation is uncountable.
*why then are we not supposed to cry? Even the sap of a tree being cut would gush!
*and come to think of it, what has gone on in the last near 10yrs of APC (Buhari-Tinubu) is beyond marginalisation, it WICKED BRUTALISATION OF NDIGBO, TENDING TO ECONOMIC POGROM!
*and you dare ask us not to cry. What do we lose by crying out loud?
*whether we cry or not, the hapless Igbo toiling away in Idumota, Kano, Maiduguri or Malabo, living and dying by the sweat of his brows will never stop or wait for our rogue FG to live his life.
*but we must cry MARGINALISATION without seizing because we must put it on record that we are being dealt a rough hand... just in case tomorrow comes.
*we must weep and cry because our compatriots from the west and north would shout the loudest if the shoe is in the other foot.
*to cut the story short, I think we are increasingly being sucked into this strange habit of self-abnegation. Others have hated us so much and spoken ill of us so much that we too have joined them.
*we are now SELF-LACERATING! Trying to outdo our enemies in putting ourselves down.
*final word: IGBO IS DOING WELL. Can we do better? Yes. But under our circumstances, we are doing well. Even doing better than ALL those who have cornered our commonwealth.
Igbo will always do well because it's in our DNA to excel. That's why they are in severe angst because the more they hold us down, the more we sprout and soar!
