The 43rd Ordinary Meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff kicked off in Abuja, Nigeria, with a call to action from the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, reports ITREALMS.
In his welcome address, General Musa emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing the complex security threats facing the West African region. "We must support our political leadership by entrenching a conducive and secure environment for economic development to thrive," he said.
The three-day meeting brings together defence chiefs from the 15 ECOWAS member states to discuss critical security issues, including terrorism, maritime security, and the proposed review of pledges for the ECOWAS Standby Force.
General Musa highlighted the need for collaboration and coordination among member states to address the root causes and symptoms of insecurity in the region. "The complexity of the security landscape demands that we leverage our collective expertise, intelligence assets, and coordinate our efforts across borders," he stressed.
The meeting will also consider the rotation of staff officers of peace support operations divisions and the ECOWAS Standby Force, as well as maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
The meeting is expected to produce actionable strategies to strengthen the security framework of West Africa and the entire continent. As General Musa concluded, "Together, we will build a safer and more prosperous future for our people."
